The waste audit included a lot of events, some of them being; Classroom trash, Weighing the bag, Dumping trash on the tarp, Sorting the trash, and Weighing the piles.
Classroom Trash:
This was when we went through all the classrooms collecting all their trash in the trash bins.
Weighing the bag:
After collecting all the trash in the classrooms we weighed the trash, to see how much it weighed. The trash bag we weighed was 8Ibs.
Dumping trash on the tarp:
After we weighed the trash bag, we took out all the trash in the bag and dumped it on the tarp.
Sorting the trash:
When we were done with the dumping of the trash on the tarp, our group sorted the trash into different piles. The piles we made were: bottles, paper, plastics, metallics and organic matter.
Weighing the piles:
The piles that were weighed included: The mixed paper pile which weighed 4Ibs, Newspaper pile weighed 1.1Ibs, Plastic bottles weighed 2.2Ibs, Food Scraps&Soiled Paper 2Ibs and Others 2Ibs.
Summary:
Classrooms can reduce consumption and disposal of materials, by reusing the materials that can be reused and only use the materials that they need. The 4r's can be applied to the materials found in the trash, by separating the recyclable metrials from the organic matter.
Some of the specific materials that should be the class focus on diverting in the classroom would be the materials that are not needed in the classroom.
